If you are suffering from extreme mental health distress and are a risk to yourself or others, you may be referred to stay in the hospital in an Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit.
What is an Acute Inpatient Unit?
Acute Inpatient Units are secure hospital wards where our team can support you through extreme mental distress.

Fees and Charges Description
Government funding of health and disability services means that eligible people may receive free inpatient and outpatient public hospital services, subsidies on prescription items and a range of support services for people with disabilities in the community.

The Inpatient Units are staffed 24 hours, 7 days a week
Programmes
There is an Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit at Tauranga Hospital (Te Whare Maiangiangi Unit) and Whakatāne Hospital (Te Toki Maurere Unit). The Acute Inpatient Units are for adults who are experiencing extreme mental health distress. This includes adults suffering from a severe eating disorder that has become dangerous to their health. At Whakatāne Hospital (Te Toki Maurer Unit) there is one bed available for hospital detox. Hospital detox is a programme that supports people who have become physically dependent on alcohol or other drugs to detox safely in the hospital. What to expect: The Acute Inpatient Units have a team of psychiatrists, psychologists, mental health nurses, occupational therapists social workers and other health care providers who will all help you through your stay in hospital. There are staff in the Units at all times (24/7). You will meet with the team for assessment and to develop a treatment plan for your stay in the Unit. This may include counselling, group activities and other programmes, depending on your needs. Your stay and recovery progress will be reviewed on a regular basis, to make sure you do not stay in the hospital longer than you need to. When you do leave the Unit, we will work closely with you and the Community Mental Health Team to make a plan and put supports in place to make sure you stay well at home. Referral Process
You will only stay in an Acute Inpatient Unit if you have been referred by another health professional. Usually, referrals are from the Crisis Team who may feel you need to stay safely in the hospital for treatment.
The referral will be discussed with you and your family/whānau so that you understand what to expect and how long you might stay.
