Our teams provide support for adults experiencing mental health issues, including expectant mothers.

Southern DHB Adult Community Mental Health Services are provided by the following teams:

  • Central Lakes Community Mental Health Team operates out of 19 Douglas Street, Frankton and Hospital Street, Clyde
  • Dunedin North Community Mental Health Team operates out of Dunedin Hospital
  • Dunedin South Community Mental Health Team operates out of Wakari Hospital
  • Invercargill Community Mental Health Team operates out of Southland Hospital
  • Southern Rivers Community Mental Health Team operates out of 24 Clyde Street, Balclutha and 16 Irwell Street, Gore
  • Waitaki Community Mental Health Team operates out of 2 Trent Street, Ōamaru

Fees and Charges Description

There are no fees for services to public patients if you are lawfully in New Zealand and meet one of the eligibility criteria set by the Ministry of Health. If you do not meet the criteria, you will be required to pay for the full cost of any medical treatment you recieve during your stay.

Community Mental Health Services

The Community Mental Health Teams are made up of health professionals who provide a range of specialist mental health services for people aged 18 years and over who have been diagnosed with a significant mental illness. We will also see people aged 16 or 17 if they have left school. Appointments will be at the Community Mental Health office nearest you and/or when appropriate, in your home or workplace. We also see people at Medical Centres if appropriate.

Referrals for Community Mental Health Services can be received from your GP and other health professionals via fax or post to the location nearest you. We do accept referrals from any source, including self-referral, but we prefer that your GP is informed so that both services are involved with your treatment.

Maternal Mental Health Service

The Southland Maternal Mental Health Team provides a free service to the Southland district. This service is available to all women who have a known or suspected mental health disorder, during pregnancy and for one year following birth. The service provides quality care for women who may be experiencing difficulties relating to mental health (baby and family/whānau), throughout her antenatal, birth, and postnatal experience, which promotes respect, dignity and acceptance within the community and promotes optimum mental health for mother.

Description

The Southland Maternal Mental Health Team provides a free service to the Southland district. This service is available to all women who have a known or suspected mental health disorder, during pregnancy and for one year following birth.

Day Activity Centres are a community based day activity service for people who have been referred  through the Mental Health Services and have agreed Management Plans.

The Early Intervention in Psychosis Service treats young people aged 18 - 30 experiencing first-episode psychosis, and mothers experiencing postpartum psychosis for the first time irrespective of age. The treatment is provided through intensive therapy, education, and support, to recovery in a safe and supportive environment by a highly skilled specialised multidisciplinary team. We strive to involve the client’s family and whānau as a key element of the client’s recovery. Location: Ground Floor, 154 Hanover St, Dunedin Hospital

Referral Process

Access to the Early Intervention in Psychosis Service is restricted to:

  • Individuals aged 18 - 30 years experiencing their first episode of psychosis
  • Individuals under 18 years experiencing their first episode of psychosis and it has been agreed with Youth Specialty Service that EIPS is the most appropriate service for them
  • Woman of any age experiencing psychosis associated with pregnancy or birth, and first episode of psychosis.
