Update: Our community told us we need to make some changes. In response, we are improving the way mental health services works with you. We want to assure you we will talk with all services users and their whaanau about how changes might affect their care. If you have any questions please talk to your mental health clinician.
Pacific people have a holistic view of health where a person is in tune with his/her environment and community. Health is achieved when there are positive and balanced relationships between these three elements: Atua (God), Tagata (people) and Laufanua (land/environment). Health is the state in which a person's physical, mental and spiritual needs are in balance and the person is able to meet their obligations to themselves, their family, village and community.
When there is an imbalance there are people here at Faletoa to help you and your family.
We work alongside other mental health services, including Taunaki & Te Puawaitanga (Child and Adolescent Mental Health) and Adult Mental Health.
Who Do We See?
We provide support and advice for Pacific people aged 18 to 65 who reside within the Counties Manukau Health region.
We believe that when there is an imbalance or disconnect in one of the main relationships (Atua, Tagata and Laufanua) this may impact a person's mental health and wellbeing. You may be hearing voices, you may feel like people are watching or talking about you, you may have difficulty concentrating, amongst other things. If you are experiencing some of these signs of unwellness please go and see your GP as soon as possible.

Who Are We?
Faletoa (meaning house of courage) is a team of experienced mental health workers skilled in helping Pacific people with mental health problems.
The team includes staff from Tonga, Niue, Samoa, and the Cook Islands. Many staff are skilled in speaking one or more Pacific languages:

- Community Mental Health Nurses
- Psychiatrists
- Social Workers
- Peer Support Specialists
- Cultural Advisors
Referral Expectations
Counties Manukau Health Adult Mental Health receive all referrals to our service. A person from the Intake and Acute Assessment team may contact you and your family to discuss your needs.

Our service is free of charge for people entitled to free health care in New Zealand.

How Do We Help? Once you are referred to our service a coordinator (who may be a nurse, social worker or occupational therapist) will meet with you to discuss ways we can help support you and your family. You may also need the support of our psychologist for talking therapies or a peer support specialist, who are members of our team with lived experience of mental health concerns. All our staff work together to ensure that your physical, mental, social and spiritual needs are in balance so that your GP can provide ongoing care and support for your mental wellbeing. If you would like to talk to someone with lived experience of mental health and or addictions contact our Peer TALK phoneline on 0800 234 432. This phoneline operates between 5pm and Midnight, seven days a week, and will connect you with a trained peer support worker who will listen to your experience and help you access further help if needed. Note: Peer Talk supports adults over 18. If you are under 18 contact Youthline on 0800 37 66 33. Need Immediate Help? For urgent after-hours support please contact 0800 775 222, or phone (09) 270 9090 any time. If you are having suicidal thoughts, or are worried about someone, there is help available.
