Description

The Southern DHB Mental Health Emergency Services are delivered by the Southland Mental Health Emergency Team (SMHET) based at Southland Hospital and the Emergency Psychiatric Service based at Dunedin Hospital. Dunedin Hospital also provide a Psychiatric Consultation Liaison Service.

Fees and Charges Description

There are no fees for services to public patients if you are lawfully in New Zealand and meet one of the eligibility criteria set by the Ministry of Health. If you do not meet the criteria, you will be required to pay for the full cost of any medical treatment you recieve during your stay.

This is a 24/7 service.

Outside of the below office hours, cover is provided by a limited number of staff

 Dunedin Hospital  Monday - Friday 8.30am - 5.00pm

The Southland Mental Health Emergency Team (SMHET) provides a 24 hour/7 day week service for people who need crisis mental health (emergency) treatment, assistance and information about The Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act.

Referral Process

Call 0800 46 78 46.

It is preferred that referrers contact the team by telephone as this is a mobile team and staff may not always be on-site to attend to walk-in referrals. Telephone referrals may be made to the service through the following channels:

  • General Practitioners - including after hours service
  • Community agencies - e.g. Police, St John, Supporting Families, PACT and also Southern DHB
  • Self presentation, friends family/whānau, concerned members of the public

If the referral is considered urgent, i.e. life threatening, immediate phone contact for consultation is vital.
