Description

The Regional Huntington’s Disease (HD) Service provides specialist assessment, management, and clinical support for people with Huntington’s disease across the Auckland and Northland regions.
 
Our team works in partnership with a wide network of services and NGO’s, including:
  • Auckland Genetics Service
  • Neurology and Movement Disorders teams at Auckland Hospital
  • Liaison Psychiatry
  • HD Youth Organisation and other HD Associations
  • Health New Zealand (Te Whatu Ora) services across Auckland, Waitemata and County Manukau
  • NGOs, primary healthcare providers, Kaikaranga (formerly Taikura Trust), and other mental health services.
We support individuals and families throughout the course of the condition, from Presymptomatic testing through to advanced stage care.


Clinical and Genetic Support

We offer:
  • Comprehensive assessments for Presymptomatic and Predictive HD testing
  • Close collaboration with Auckland Genetics Service for follow up and counselling
  • Support for reproductive planning, including coordination with fertility services for IVF options aimed at preventing transmission of the HD gene
  • Integrated care with Neurology, including the Movement Disorders team. Opportunities to participate in research, including ENROLL HD, the Skyhawk study, and future clinical trials

The Regional HD Service is not an acute mental health service. As a regional, part time service, we aim to respond to enquiries within 72 hours. Our services is delivered through elective outpatient clinics across four locations, as listed below, along with community based assessments and support.
