The Auckland Regional Huntington’s Disease Service

Public Service, Psychiatry

Description

The RHDS provides assessment and clinical support to patients with Huntington’s Disease in the Auckland and Northland Regions. We work closely with Huntington’s Disease Association, Centre for Brain Research and Auckland District Health Board Departments of Genetics, Neurology, Reablement and Liaison Psychiatry in various capacities including service coordination, primary clinical management and joint working with and consultation to other Mental Health Services.

Psychosocial assessment as part of the Huntington’s Disease presymptomatic testing and fertility treatment is provided in close collaboration with, and facilitated by, the Genetics Service.

Referral for clinical assessment and management is accepted from primary, secondary and tertiary care providers by utilizing the RDHS referral form. Our service works flexibly with other providers to provide service coordination, psychological treatment, psychiatric management and follow up of HD-related needs.

Our service also provides training to support carers and health staff in relation to Huntington’s Disease related management.

The service operates part time hours and will endeavour to respond to messages and enquiries as soon as possible, typically within 72 hours. The service operates from an elective outpatient and community based model and for acute and crisis mental health support it would be appropriate to contact Mental Health Crisis Services.
