The Mental Health Act

Most of the people we see at Tiaho Mai get to make their own decisions about their treatment, and no assessments and treatments will be done without their consent. However if a patient is so unwell that they are a serious danger to themselves or others they may be assessed and required to accept care and treatment under the Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act  1992. If someone becomes a patient under the Mental Health Act then their right to refuse treatment can be overridden and they may be required to stay at Tiaho Mai. Every patient under the Mental Health Act has certain rights and the opportunity to appeal and seek review of their treatment.
