Dr Leopold Kai Matthews studied medicine at Imperial College London, graduating with degrees in medicine & surgery, along with neuroscience & mental health. After relocating to New Zealand from the UK, he initially worked in the field of general surgery, and then moved across into the surgical removal of skin cancers and other lesions. From there, it was an easy transition into the similarly detail-orientated field of hair restoration.
Dr Kai was the Senior Hair Transplant Doctor at Gro Clinics NZ until May 2025. He left Gro and went on to establish The Auckland Clinic as our Surgical Director, bringing his values and perfectionist nature with him. In 2024, Dr Kai performed over 50% of the hair transplant procedures carried out in New Zealand.
Dr Kai specialises in the FUE method of hair transplantation, which is widely accepted as the gold standard amongst hair restoration experts. This technique enables increased precision of graft placement and shorter recovery times compared to FUT.
