Description

The Northern Vein Centre is the first specialist clinic in NZ, set up to deal solely with venous problems.

A leader in its field, the centre performed the first Ultrasound guided sclerotherapy in 1995, the first Endovenous laser treatment, the first Trivex surgery in NZ, and the first VeinGogh in New Zealand for spider or thread veins on the face and legs.

We have also started "Gluing" veins as well as the above, using Venaseal endovenous occlusion system. This is the most comfortable of the procedures with the outcome the same as laser ablation.

We were the first, and still the only clinic in Auckland, to use NeoV laser with radial fibre, which is the "gold standard" in endovenous ablation technology. Unlike old lasers, the radial fibre redirects the laser beam to hit the vein wall perpendicularly, for less discomfort and better efficiency.

As all forms of minimally invasive treatments are undertaken, there is no commercial bias in treatment, as we believe that there is no one treatment that suits every person.

Treatments include modern minimal surgery, EVLA (Laser), Venaseal, UGS (Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy), microsclerotherapy for spider veins, and thermocoagulation of facial spider veins and spider veins too small for sclerotherapy.

We deal with all problems relating to varicose veins as well as other venous disorders such as spider veins, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and superficial thrombophlebitis. We are also Southern Cross affiliated.

What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins occur when veins in the legs and thighs become enlarged and twisted. This is caused by the failure of the one-way valve system in the veins.
Typical symptoms of varicose veins include:
  • tired, aching legs
  • leg swelling
  • itching in the area of the varicose vein and leg ulcers
  • nocturnal severe leg cramps in bed.
At this point, trying to replace or correct the valves has not been very successful, with loss of limb as a reported complication! Once varicosed, they remain so, and there is no treatment to correct them. Nor is there any treatment that can reverse the inborn weakness and tendency to develop varicose veins.

AMMARA Medical Laser Clinic
Our cosmetic laser skin clinic specialises in tattoo removal, pigmented spots removal and skin rejuvenation. We also use Ellman's Surgitron to remove seborrhoeic keratosis, moles or skin tags. All treated lesions are first assessed using dermatoscopic examination. Our top of the line RevLite Nd-Yag Q switch laser works on all skin types with minimal discomfort and minimal chance of scarring. All work is done by doctors all of whom have extensive experience in the use of lasers. Read more about our clinic here.

Doctors

How do I access this service?

Contact us

When you come to your appointment, your specialist doctor will ask questions about your illness and examine you to try to determine or confirm the diagnosis. This process may also require a number of tests (e.g. blood tests, x-rays, scans, or more specific tests to examine blood flow such as duplex ultrasound). Sometimes this can all be done during one visit, but for some conditions this will take several follow-up appointments. Occasionally some tests are arranged even before your appointment to try to speed up the process.

Once a diagnosis has been made, your doctor will discuss treatment options with you. According to all local and international guide licenses we provide only minimally invasive, non-surgical procedures.

An honest description of what can be realistically achieved is always discussed.

We will also discuss whether treatment is in fact needed for medical reasons i.e. what would happen if nothing was done.

Services Provided

Varicose Veins - Endovenous Laser Treatment

Endovenous laser treatment: We are a world leader in this technique (Med J Austral. 2006; 185:199-202). A laser fibre is inserted under local anaesthetic into the long or short saphenous vein. Local anaesthetic is placed around the vein, and the main trunk is obliterated in about 60 secs. Immediate return to work. No scars. Safest of all the treatments.

Varicose Veins - Simple Sclerotherapy

A small needle is used to inject a chemical solution into the vein that causes the vein to collapse. Compression with a bandage/stocking is required for 2 weeks. Surprisingly barely able to feel the injections.

Varicose Veins - Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy

A Duplex ultrasound is used to create a picture of the insides of the leg. Using this image as a radar, deeper veins that are not visible are able to be injected at precisely the leaking point. Compression is required for 2 weeks. Able to go straight back to work. Suitable for most veins. Has the highest recurrence rate.

Treatment for spider or thread veins

NZ's first VeinGogh (Pronounced Vein Go). A tiny probe the diameter of a hair, is inserted into the spider vein and ablates the vessel with 3 tiny bursts of energy. The probe is insulated except for the tip, so surrounding tissue does not get damaged. Initial treatment of spider veins in the legs is usually done by microsclerotherapy, and remaining spider veins then ablated using VeinGogh. Face veins (nose and cheeks) do not need microsclerotherapy...just VeinGogh The advantages are: Mild discomfort during the procedure, as oppossed to laser. All signs of vein and treatment are gone in 3-4 weeks. Occassionally a second treatment is required. Safer than laser. Only a very minimal risk of scarring. Less exensive than laser.

Venaseal ("Glue)"

The medical vein sealant (glue) is introduced to the vein via the microcatheter or directly with a needle. Then the vein is closed within a few minutes. The procedure is "cold" so there is no risk of damaging adjacent structures. Also, as the closure is instant, there is no need to wear compression stockings if the procedure is not accompanied by ultrasound guided sclerotherapy.

  • VenaSeal (Glue) (PDF, 303 KB)

Like the other procedures, a small tube (catheter) is placed in the trunk where the visible veins originate. Instead of a laser at the tip of the catheter, the medical sealant is placed within the vein. It is safe, painless, and soft. According to recent long term studies, the outcome of the treatment does not differ to the one achieved by laser. The advantage is only one tiny needle prick for local anaesthetic, and no risk to surrounding arteries, veins, or nerves.
