Scope of a general dentist

A general dentist is involved in all aspects of dental care and they will refer patients to a specialist dentist for procedures and treatments that are outside of their scope. They educate patients to maintain healthy teeth and gums and diagnose and treat problems of the teeth, gums and mouth. A general dentist performs the majority of dental procedures such as tooth extractions, fillings, creating crowns, bridges and dentures, root canals and teeth whitening. Some dentists have gained extra expertise in certain areas of dentistry and can provide advanced treatment in those areas. Dentists can administer pain relief and medications appropriate to your dental treatment.
