Description
NURSE PRACTITIONER OWNED AND OPERATED.
Family Health Matters is a primary health centre providing evidence based healthcare centrally located in the Glen Innes Community, for all your family health needs. We make it our point to see your sick child under 5 on the same day.
Our mission is to create a safe and supportive space in which we can work together and provide personalised, family-oriented medical care to the people in our community and surrounding areas who want to take control of their health and live a more vibrant and healthy life.
Our Approach at Family Health Matters
At Family Health Matters, our focus is simple.
We help people feel better, understand their health and move forward with confidence.
Healthcare can often feel rushed, confusing, or impersonal. We believe it should be the opposite - thoughtful, supportive and built around the individual sitting in front of us. That means creating a space where patients feel safe to talk openly about their health, where they are listened to carefully and where their concerns are taken seriously.
Our care is grounded in evidence-based medicine and best clinical practice, but we also recognise that every person’s health story is different. No two patients arrive with exactly the same experiences, symptoms, or goals. That’s why we take a whole-person approach.
We look at the full picture - physical health, lifestyle, family circumstances and long-term wellbeing so we can develop practical, personalised plans that support lasting health.
We take the time to understand what patients are experiencing, explain what may be happening in their body and work together to create solutions that help them feel stronger, healthier and more in control of their wellbeing. And when additional expertise is needed, we work closely with a network of trusted healthcare specialists to ensure our patients receive the most comprehensive care possible.
Because great healthcare is not just about treating illness.
It’s about helping people live healthier, fuller lives and feel like themselves again.
As every body and mind is different, we are mindful of our patients’ needs and taking the time to develop a personalised treatment plan for our patients. We are working as a team and we are part of a wide network of health specialists to which we can refer our patients as needed.
The business of treating people, not patients — Family Health Matters

A primary care medical practice is far more than a place to go when you are feeling unwell and needing a quick cure. The medical staff are able to help children and adults of all ages with a range of physical and emotional difficulties. Staff are at the centre of the healthcare hub and will be aware of services and expertise that are available locally and further-a-field. They are also aware of the link that stress and unhappy life events have on physical health so know when to suggest a talking therapy rather than medication.

Each primary care medical practice will have its own procedure for repeat prescribing but the following rules are common to most, if not all. Patients who are well-known to the practice who have a stable condition like asthma, hypertension or diabetes could be allowed to get a repeat prescription for up to six months. Repeat prescriptions are never given to patients who are not known to the practice and there is probably a blanket ban on repeats for narcotics and other drugs that could be misused as doctors are expected to monitor these drugs carefully. Ordering Prescriptions Prescriptions can be requested via your Manage My Health portal or can be ordered online via email [email protected], by phone, or in person. There is a 24-hour turnaround once your request has been received and the cost is $20.00. The exception to this is Fridays, when your request will be actioned on Mondays and available for collection on Tuesdays. If you require a “same day/urgent prescription”, this MUST BE REQUESTED BY 12 NOON the cost is $30.00 and this will be actioned on the same day, by close of business. If you have not registered or activated your Manage My Health account please ask our reception for assistance or click the link below. If you are already registered, we will send you an activation code to add Family Health Matters to your profile so you will be able to access your records. Prescriptions must be paid for in advance and we will send you a secure pay link via SMS or email. Once we have received your payment, your prescription will sent to your chosen pharmacy. 12 Month Prescriptions We’ve had a number of questions about 12-month Prescribing. In some cases, it may be clinically appropriate to issue up to 12 months of prescriptions. However, this is not guaranteed. Eligibility depends on individual health conditions, stability of symptoms, required monitoring and the type of medication involved. Some medicines are not suitable for long-term prescribing due to safety considerations or regulatory requirements. Our clinicians will always assess each situation carefully to ensure prescribing is safe, appropriate and in line with current guidelines. If you have questions about your medication or whether 12-month prescribing may apply to you, please discuss this at your next appointment or please make a specific “12 month eligibility assessment appointment.”

Sometimes a sample of blood or urine is needed to discover what is wrong with you or to measure something in your blood so that the right medication is given to you. These tests could be anything from blood sugar to a full blood count or a sample of tissue to test for cancer. While urine can generally be tested in the surgery, blood and other specimens are usually sent away for testing at a laboratory. Most results come back within 48 hours unless a very rare test is needed which has to go to a specialist lab further away when it might take a little longer.

Liquid nitrogen is a fast, effective treatment provided in many practices to treat viral warts, sun damaged skin, skin tags and many benign cosmetic lesions. It comes in a container with a nozzle and is usually applied by swab or spray. Often one treatment is all that is needed but sometimes it may need repeating after two weeks. Because it cannot be stored for too long, you will often find that a number of patients will be treated one after the other. For more information click here.

All women and people with a cervix aged 25 – 69 who have ever had intimate skin-to-skin contact or been sexually active should have regular cervical screening. This includes women who have been immunised against HPV. Together, regular screening and HPV immunisation provide the best protection against cervical cancer. There are now more options for how you have cervical screening done: a simple vaginal swab test for HPV, either done yourself or with help from a healthcare professional a cervical sample taken by a healthcare professional (used to be known as a smear test). Talk with your healthcare provider to decide which option is best for you. If HPV is found, you may need to have a follow-up test or be referred directly for colposcopy. If you’ve not yet had HPV testing, you should be screened 3 years after your last test (or 1 year if immune deficient). Once you have had an HPV test, and providing HPV is not found, your next screening will be in 5 years (or 3 years if immune deficient). LARC methods are very effective at preventing unplanned pregnancy and are “fit and forget” forms of contraception – you don’t need to remember them every day or every month. LARC methods: Intrauterine Contraceptive Devices (IUCD or IUD) are inserted through the cervix into a woman’s uterus. IUCDs may be either hormonal (Mirena® or Jaydess® ) or non-hormonal (copper IUCD). Jadelle® is a hormone-releasing implant that is inserted just under the skin of the upper arm. Depending on the type of device, it will need to be changed after between three and ten years. Read more about LARC methods here
