Prof Nishith Patel

Prof Nishith Patel is an internationally trained Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at the Waikato Cardiothoracic Unit. He has specialist expertise in total arterial revascularisation for ischaemic heart disease, complex aortic surgery, aortic root surgery, heart valve surgery, and atrial fibrillation surgery.

He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Auckland, with a strong academic and research focus on aortic disease and aortic dissection. He was awarded the 2023 Foundation 100 Fellowship by the Heart Foundation of New Zealand to further his research in this area, with his work recognised nationally by the Waikato Herald, Heart Foundation, and NZ Herald.

Nishith operates at both Waikato Hospital and Braemar Hospital, and is part of Heart Surgeon Group. He is committed to a team-based model of care working collaboratively within a group of surgeons to ensure patients benefit from shared expertise, collective decision-making, and continuity of care, rather than a solo practice approach.

Alongside his clinical work, he remains actively involved in research and innovation to improve outcomes in complex cardiac and aortic conditions.
