Programmes
Te Puna Waiora is a 23-bed unit, catering for the needs of people with acute mental illness. The unit comprises three separate areas catering for the specific and individual needs of our service users. The Nikau Area is a 12 bed general adult area admitting men and women who, though unwell, are able to participate in the full activities of the ward and utilise leave periods as part of their recovery plan. Within the Nikau area we have a Whānau room, kitchen facilities, activities/art room, lounge, sensory modulation room, gym/pool table area and staff office. The Kowhai Area is a 4 bed older adults area admitting men and women over 65 years with either a mental health and/or a dementia type disorder. Facilities include full kitchen, lounge, conservatory, courtyard, individual bedrooms, Occupational Therapist room and staff office. The Rimu Secure Area is a 7 bed locked area which caters for men and women who present with a high level of risk either to themselves or others. This area is spacious with multiple lounge spaces, sensory modulation room, visitors/interview room, courtyard and kitchen facilities. Two of the bedrooms have private suite facilities including private lounge, bathroom and courtyard areas enabling staff to provide highly individualised care. These suites can also be used to care for vulnerable adolescents if requiring acute admission, maintaining their safety separate from adult service users. Family/whānau are offered to stay and support their loved one in these suites. Service users are reviewed on a regular basis and admissions are kept as brief as necessary to promote the person's independence and autonomy. The inpatient team work with our Community Mental Health Teams and the Assessment & Brief Care Team to plan discharge care for the individual when discharged to community to ensure supports are in place to maintain the person's wellness.
