Profile

Prof David McCormack is an internationally trained Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon and National Lead for Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand. He previously served as Clinical Director and Head of Department of the Waikato Cardiothoracic Unit, as well as Associate Chief Medical Officer of Waikato DHB.

He is a Professor at Te Huataki Waiora School of Health, University of Waikato, and an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Auckland. His clinical expertise centres on aortic surgery, alongside the management of ischaemic heart disease and heart valve conditions.

David operates at both Waikato Hospital and Braemar Hospital, and is part of Heart Surgeon Group. He strongly values a team-based approach to care working within a collaborative surgical group to provide continuity, shared expertise, and comprehensive decision-making for patients.

He is actively involved in advancing surgical practice through the development and application of technology, with a focus on improving healthcare delivery, clinical leadership, and innovative research.
